Sashiko, literally means "little stabs" is a form of decorative reinforcement stitching (or functional embroidery) from Japan that started out of practical need during the Edo era (1615-1868). Traditionally this techique was used to reinforce points of wear or to repair worn places or tears with patches, making the darned piece stronger, warmer and to preserve the garment or blanket.
Sashiko embroidery traditionally used geometric patterns and patterns inspired by nature to repair and embellish fabrics. (waves, mountains, bamboo, lightning, linked hexagons, persimmon flower etc.)
Materials Required
Bring your creativity and any clean, pre washed garments or fabric to embellish, repair or to simply cover a stain. Jeans, cotton jacket, skirt, pillow cover or sweater- you name it. Ideally something you have and want to upcycle.
